Loving God With No Strings Attached

A Journey of Trust, Gratitude, and Rest

There was a time I thought loving God meant doing everything right, praying enough, serving enough, believing enough. I measured His love for me by how well things were going in my life. If prayers were answered, I felt loved. If they weren’t, I wondered what I’d done wrong.

But over time, God began to teach me something deeper, that His love isn’t performance-based, and neither should mine be. Loving God with no strings attached means loving Him for who He is, not for what He gives.

When Love Is Tested

It’s easy to love God when everything is falling into place, when the job comes through, the healing happens, or the prayer is answered. But what about when heaven seems silent?

I remember a season when I prayed for something dear to my heart, and nothing happened. I fasted, prayed, and declared every scripture I knew. Still, silence. I began to question, “Lord, are You even listening?”

Then one day, while reading Romans 8:28, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God…”, it hit me. The verse didn’t say all things work together for those who perform well or those who get everything right. It said those who love God.

That truth changed everything. My love for Him wasn’t supposed to depend on outcomes. It was meant to rest on who He is, faithful, good, and unchanging.

Faith That Rests, Not Strives

One of my favourite teachers once said, “Faith is not a working up; it’s a settling down.” That phrase became my anchor.

When I stopped striving to make things happen and started resting in His love, peace began to fill my heart. I realised that faith isn’t about convincing God to move, it’s about trusting that He already is.

Isaiah 26:3 says, “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” That’s what loving God with no strings attached looks like, peace in the waiting, trust in the silence, and gratitude in every circumstance.

Practical Ways to Love God Freely

Loving God unconditionally isn’t just a feeling, it’s a daily choice. Here are a few ways I’ve learned to live it out:

  • Choose gratitude over grumbling. Even when things don’t go as planned, I thank Him in the situation, not necessarily for it (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
  • Pray from relationship, not ritual. I no longer pray to earn His favour; I pray because I’m His child.
  • Replace formulas with faith. I stopped trying to “get it right” and started focusing on knowing Him more deeply.
  • Rest instead of striving. When I don’t see results, I remind myself that not seeing change doesn’t mean God isn’t working.

When we love God this way, gratitude becomes our lifestyle. We stop blaming Him when things don’t work out and start trusting that He’s still good, always.

Questions to Reflect On

  • Do I love God for who He is, or for what He gives me?
  • Can I still praise Him when the answer delays?
  • Am I willing to surrender my plans for His perfect will?

These questions have shaped my walk with God. They remind me that real love is tested not in abundance, but in surrender.

The Freedom of Unconditional Love

When we shift our focus from “What can I get from God?” to “How can I know Him more?”, something beautiful happens, peace replaces anxiety, and faith replaces fear.

Psalm 91:14–16 says, “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him… I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him.” God responds to love that is freely given, not earned.

And Romans 5:8 reminds us, “But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” If He loved us that much before we ever did anything right, how could our love for Him be conditional?

A Prayer from My Heart

Father, thank You for loving me unconditionally.
Teach me to love You the same way, with no strings attached.
Even when I don’t see the answers, I choose to trust You.
Even when I don’t understand, I choose to rest in Your goodness.
You are my Shepherd, my Provider, my Peace.
I love You, Lord, not for what You do, but for who You are.
Amen. ❤️

When we love God with no strings attached, we stop chasing blessings and start enjoying relationship. We stop performing and start resting. And in that place of rest, we discover that He’s been taking care of us all along, not because we earned it, but because He loves us.
