God’s Supernatural Gifts for His Church

As I shared in my previous posts about the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues, my Christian journey has often involved asking sincere questions and searching the Scriptures for clarity. The same was true when it came to what many churches commonly refer to as “prophecy.”

Growing up with a conservative Christian background, I was always cautious about people who claimed to “have a word from God.” Part of my hesitation came from something that many believers quietly wrestle with, the fine line between genuine spiritual gifts and practices that resemble fortune-telling or spirit mediums. In many cultures, including African contexts, we are familiar with people who claim supernatural knowledge about someone’s life or future. Because of that, it can sometimes feel uncomfortable when something that appears similar happens in a church setting.

Naturally, this made me cautious. My upbringing had taught me to stay away from anything that resembled spiritual mediums, divination, or fortune telling, and so I kept my distance from environments where people frequently “prophesied.” However, as I continued to study the Word of God more deeply, I realised that the Bible clearly teaches about spiritual gifts given by the Holy Spirit for the benefit of the church. Paul explains this clearly:

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” (1 Corinthians 12:7–11)

This passage goes on to list nine gifts of the Spirit, all given by the same Holy Spirit and distributed according to His will. An important truth that helped shape my understanding is this: these gifts are manifestations, not possessions. They are not badges of spiritual status, and they are not limited to certain titles or positions. They are simply ways in which the Holy Spirit chooses to work through believers for the benefit of others.

The Three Categories of Spiritual Gifts

The nine gifts are often grouped into three categories, each revealing a different way the Holy Spirit works through believers.

Revelation Gifts: Gifts That Reveal

These gifts reveal knowledge or insight that comes directly from the Spirit.

Word of Wisdom

Supernatural insight into God’s plan or direction for a situation. In Acts, Paul receives divine wisdom during a dangerous journey at sea. (Acts 27:21–25)

Word of Knowledge

Supernatural knowledge about a person or situation that could not be known naturally. Jesus demonstrated this when He revealed details of the Samaritan woman’s life. (John 4:17–19)

Discerning of Spirits

The ability to recognise the spiritual source behind certain actions or manifestations. Paul demonstrated this when he discerned the spirit of divination in a slave girl. (Acts 16:16–18)

Power Gifts: Gifts That Demonstrate God’s Power

These gifts reveal God’s power working through believers.

The Gift of Faith

A supernatural confidence in God that enables extraordinary results. (Hebrews 11:33–34)

Gifts of Healing

In 1 Corinthians 12:9, Paul actually writes:
to another gifts of healings by the one Spirit.”
Both words are plural. A suggestion that it’s different kinds of illnesses, different ways healing occurs, different people used by God in different moments. So healing is not a single gift owned by someone, but multiple expressions of God’s healing power.Supernatural healing of physical, emotional, or mental conditions. (Matthew 4:23, Acts 5:15–16)

Working of Miracles

Divine interventions that go beyond natural laws.
Jesus demonstrated this when He turned water into wine and with Paul on many occasions (John 2:1–11, Acts 19:11–12)

Vocal Gifts: Gifts That Speak

These gifts involve speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Prophecy

Speaking a message from God that strengthens, encourages, and comforts believers.

“But [on the other hand] the one who prophesies speaks to people for edification [to promote their spiritual growth] and [speaks words of] encouragement [to uphold and advise them concerning the matters of God] and [speaks words of] consolation [to compassionately comfort them].” (1 Corinthians 14:3)

Different Kinds of Tongues

We have covered most this topic in the previous post. Speaking in languages inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Interpretation of Tongues

The supernatural ability to understand and communicate the meaning of a message spoken in tongues.

Anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that they may interpret what they say.” (1 Corinthians 14:13)

Here we see that it’s not only possible to speak or pray in tongues, but also to interpret. Note that the word used there is “interpret” not “translate“. There are times when this interpretation needs to come from another especially when someone is speaking with a tongue to the people. But in our prayer language, God can give us interpretation of the things we are praying for.

There are times when I can’t pray with understanding and feel the need to keep praying in tongues. In moments like these, as I pray in these unknown tongues, my mind is simultaneously asking The Lord to give me interpretation of what is going on. Sometimes I get a name of the person I’m praying for and I then direct my thoughts towards that person as I pray.  Sometimes I get a word about what it is I’m praying for and I begin to speak life into that situation.  And, sometimes I hear what God wants to say to me or to the person I’m praying for.

Together, these nine gifts reveal God’s wisdom, His power, and His voice working through His people. In the next post, I want to share a personal experience that completely changed how I understood these gifts, a moment when God revealed something about my life through a word of knowledge that no one could have known naturally.

Prayer

Holy Spirit,
Thank You for the gifts You give to Your church.
Thank You that these gifts reveal Your wisdom, Your power, and Your voice.
Help me to understand them with humility and a sincere heart.
Teach me to seek what builds others up and brings glory to Jesus.
Guide me as I learn to walk in step with You.

In Jesus’ name. Amen. ❤️
